It is with deep regret and sadness that ESTRO learnt of the death of Professor Wolfgang Dörr on 13 October 2019.
Wolfgang Dörr was Professor of Applied and Translational Radiation Biology at the Radiation Oncology Department of the Medical University of Vienna. He lead the Radiobiology Laboratory of the Clinic and was entrusted with setting up radiobiological research for particle therapy in close cooperation with MedAustron.
After completing his studies in veterinary medicine in 1985 at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, Wolfgang Dörr turned his attention to the research of effects on irradiation of healthy and malignant cells and tissue. He spent many years of his academic career at the University Clinic for Radiation Oncology of the Faculty of Medicine Carl Gustav Carus of the Technical University of Dresden, where he significantly influenced the radiobiological research, before he moved in 2007 as Visiting Professor and later as Professor at the Medical University of Vienna.
Wolfgang Dörr was successfully involved in numerous international research projects and held positions in a large number of German, Austrian and other European scientific organisations as well as regulatory organisations in the field of radiation protection.
At ESTRO we remember Wolfgang Dörr as an enthusiastic past member of the radiobiology committee, a fervent teacher communicating the basics of radiobiology to a generation of radio-oncologists and medical physicists in numerous ESTRO courses in Europe and beyond, and a speaker at many ESTRO annual congresses.
Our sympathy goes to his wife and two sons.
