As a scientific Society, ESTRO’s mission is to facilitate research and development in radiation therapy and to stimulate scientific exchange in the field of radiation oncology and related disciplines. The ESTRO Policy for Scientific Engagement defines ESTRO’s scope of engagement.

• Over the years, ESTRO has focused predominantly on supporting and facilitating research, amongst others by means of science dissemination through  congresses and meetings and via the Journals.
• In addition, the Society stimulates more informal scientific interaction amongst its members. Interactive workshops, dedicated to specific topics aim to provide an incubation ground and a touchstone for early research projects.
• ESTRO also supports international research projects and has created a number of specific task forces within the Society such as  the European Particle Therapy Network (EPTN) and HERO (Health Economics in Radiation Oncology)  
• In order to contribute more actively to radiation oncology research, ESTRO and EORTC (European Society for Research and Treatment of Cancer) recently joined forces to set-up a common research infrastructure, E²-RADIatE (EORTC-ESTRO RADiotherapy InfrAstrucTure for Europe).
• Guidelines form the indispensable bridge to translate research output into continuing professional education and daily practice,  for the benefit of  patients. ACROP, the Advisory Committee for Radiation Oncology Practice is responsible for the coordination of the development of radiotherapy guidelines within ESTRO.
